On Monday, the very first images of Josh Brolin as Cable from Deadpool 2 hit the web, and the nerd internet exploded just a little bit. Brolin, a powerful actor who's no stranger to intimidating characters, seemed like a great fit for the role the moment he was cast, and images of his bodybuilding to get in comic-book shape were promising. Then he actually showed up—giant gun, robot arm and all—and it was perfection, equal parts imposing and playful.
This is the Deadpool franchise we're talking about, though, which means that "playful" is almost always the operative word even when it comes to the deadliest of characters. After the joyous marketing and social media campaigns that propelled the first film to box-office dominance, we would expect nothing less the second time around. That means it wouldn't be surprising at all for those powerful first Cable images to be followed by something much goofier. On Tuesday, Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, made good on that.
A day after debuting the first look at the gun-toting mutant, Reynolds posted another picture, this time of Brolin—sans cybernetic arm—posing with Deadpool. No, not that Deadpool. A much more adorable Deadpool.
I don't know who that kid is—or if there's actually someone inside that costume—but they are working that costume. Also, look to the left, and be prepared to keep looking because you will become hypnotized by the gun show Brolin's staging. He's always been a fit guy, but he clearly took the role of future-traveling, giant-gun-toting cybernetic mutant superwarrior very seriously.
Deadpool 2 arrives next year.
