Insidious: Chapter 3 actually leaves behind the Lambert family from the first two movies and is a prequel showing how paranormal investigator and psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) first learned of the mysterious spirit realm known as the Further. She makes this discovery while investigating the haunting of a young girl (Stefanie Scott) and her father (Dermot Mulroney) in their apartment by a malevolent entity.
Unlike a lot of later sequels, which tend to get passed along to outside filmmakers, Insidious: Chapter 3 is staying in the family. Although director James Wan has not returned, his filmmaking partner and screenwriter Leigh Whannell -- who has written the entire series and plays one of Elise's assistants -- is making his directorial debut this time around. If anyone knows this material and what makes it work, it's Whannell.
Still, Insidious: Chapter 2 was a huge disappointment, so here's hoping that the latest entry -- billed as the "darkest chapter" yet -- gets back to the feeling of the terrifying original. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think.
Insidious: Chapter 3 comes out in theaters May 29, 2015.
