We're so used to seeing revivals of cult classics at this point that it's getting kind hard to be surprised by a show's return. But even the most cynical among us can still get excited about the right news, and it really feels like this is one of those moments. More than a decade after airing its final episode, Invader Zim is coming back to Nickelodeon for a new story.
The network announced the show's return Tuesday, revealing that we're in for a 90-minute movie from Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez, which is apparently how Vasquez wanted to end the series all those years ago. As for the plot, we don't know much, but Nickelodeon said it will follow "the perpetually desperate and delusional Zim as he creates a new and potentially Earth-destroying plan to finally get the attention he deserves from his Irken leaders, the Almighty Tallest."
So, exactly the same set-up as the show. Fine by me.
To get everyone even more excited, Nickelodeon also dropped this teaser, featuring a pair of very familiar voices.
Yes, that's Richard Horvitz returning as the voice of Zim, and Rosearik Rikki Simons returning as GIR. But wait, there's more! The voice cast reunion continues with Andy Berman as Dib and Melissa Fahn as Gaz. In other words, the early stages of this revival are basically perfect.
We'll get you more details about the return of Invader Zim as they become available. For now, though, let's all sing "The Doom Song."
