Word around Hollywood is that Irish star Colin Farrell is at the top of the list—which also includes Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender—to play the man who buys a virtual, violent vacation to Mars.
Len Wiseman (Underworld) is directing this adaptation of Philip K. Dick's "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," which was, of course, the source for Paul Verhoeven's 1990 hit Total Recall. Dick's original short story dealt in many of the author's favorite themes—namely, paranoia, delusion and the nature of reality—and it's unclear if Kurt Wimmer's script will embrace the story's cerebral qualities or turn into another action romp, like the Arnold Schwarzenegger version.
It's also unclear who'll be the star. Farrell seems to have the pole position primarily because he'll be available in March 2011, when Recall will start production: Hardy just signed on for Batman 3, which'll shoot next spring and summer, and will segue right into Mad Max: Fury Road. Fassbender is currently doing his duty as Magneto in X-Men: First Class and is also oft-mentioned for a role in The Hobbit, which could take him out of the Recall running if that film actually gets its act together.
All I want to know is, are there going to be three-breasted prostitutes? Hey, I'm a simple guy ...
