“It’s a trap!” Well. Okay. It’s not a trap. Actor Tim Rose has just confirmed that he's returning to the Star Wars franchise in the role of Admiral Ackbar for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Rumors had been floating around that he would appear in Disney’s new Star Wars film, but right until now, we had no real confirmation that he'd be in director J.J. Abrams’ new movie. Ackbar is quite the beloved character among fans, and his famous one-liner is often quoted and has become the subject of hundreds of memes.
In an interview with The Australian, Rose (who is a puppeteer and has to get into a full-on costume in order to control and play the very alien-looking animatronic character) talked about the high level of secrecy surrounding the movie, saying that he was “very frustrated” by it, but still happy and excited to be back.
“It takes a unique sort of masochist to ever want to do it in the first place. But the joy of doing it is the joy of animatronics, and that's taking the foam latex, an inanimate object, and making people think it's alive.”
“I'd like to think I gave Ackbar something special which you can tell. I think you can. I can tell when I see my friends who do specialised and full body suit work no matter what character they go into; I can tell you exactly who it is because I know their movements so well.”
Admiral Ackbar appeared in different media over the years, putting in appearances and being mentioned in books and comic books. He also appeared as a young version of himself in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
As for the upcoming movie, Rose hinted that fans will be really happy about the next entry in the beloved franchise. “What I can say about the new movie is that if you were a fan of the original three, you're going to absolutely love this one to bits,” Rose said. “You can expect a smorgasbord of people you love.”
Are you excited to learn that Tim Rose will be back as Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
