The third installment in the Insidious horror series is taking us back to a key character's first discovery of The Further.
That character is paranormal investigator Elise (played by Lin Shaye), who did her best to rescue the Lambert family in the first two films. Insidious: Chapter 3 is set before those movies and examines how Elise initially became aware of the existence of the evil spiritual domain known as the Further when she gets involved in the haunting of a father (Dermot Mulroney) and his daughter (Stefanie Scott).
With original director James Wan off to make Furious 7, it fell to his longtime creative partner and Insidious writer/cast member Leigh Whannell to direct the new prequel. While I'm glad to see the franchise staying in the family, so to speak, Whannell has a heavy rock to roll up the hill -- I loved and was frightened by Insidious, but thought the sequel was a bungled mess with none of the eerie atmosphere or genuine chills of the original. And prequels always raise a red flag because of their tendency to explain too much and drain a story of its mystery.
Will Whannell get the series back on track? We'll find out on June 5 when Insidious: Chapter 3 opens in theaters. In the meantime, check out a new synopsis, the trailer and a poster and let us know what you think ...
The newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
