J. Michael Straczynski has created top TV shows and major movies, and now he’s looking to bring one of his very own properties to the big screen.
Deadline reports MGM has optioned Straczynski’s comic series Rising Stars for film development, with Straczynski writing the script. Alex Gartner and Richard Suckle are signed on to produce for Atlas Entertainment.
If you’re unfamiliar, the comic follows a group of people who are linked by an extraordinary event and go on to change the world. The world soon learns that 113 children who were in utero when a meteor hit their Illinois hometown were left with special powers. But some of these super-powered people are being murdered, and when that happens, their abilities jump to the remaining “specials,” some of whom aren’t that interested in the superhero lifestyle.
Considering Straczynski is one of the minds behind Netflix’s ambitious Sense8 series (a collaboration with the Wachowskis), it sounds like familiar territory to mine — and Straczynski has shown he’s up to the ambitious challenge. Along with Sense8, his biggest claim to fame is almost certainly creating the seminal sci-fi series Babylon 5. He also scripted World War Z, Thor and Ninja Assassin.
Are you glad to see Rising Stars get a shot at big-screen glory?
