A flurry of set pics from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had fans assuming Nathan Fillion might show up as Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man, but there was pretty much nothing in the final film. Now we know why.

Minor spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

Director James Gunn has explained that he wanted to bring Fillion into the MCU as Simon Williams (a hero from the comics who is an actor turned superhero) and planned to have him showcased in the background in a series of movie posters (including a poster for a Tony Stark biopic and a bunch of B-movies). Best guess, this theater would’ve shown up when the big Ego blob starts taking out that small town. But Gunn’s plan went down the drain when the easter egg scene apparently slowed down the flow of the film and he had to cut it.

But now Gunn has released a high-res version of the Tony Stark poster featuring Fillion (playing an actor playing a fictional character played by Robert Downey, Jr., ahem). He also said that, at least for now, fans should consider the cameo as canon — meaning Fillion’s version of Simon Williams is out there, wandering around the MCU today. Which is wonderful. Who knows? Maybe he'll pop up in Phase 4?
