James McAvoy has undertaken a gargantuan task by playing the role of a man grappling with 23 split personalities in M. Night Shyamalan’s newest cinematic entry, Split. And one of those personalities could be a literal monster, since the movie is said to mix in some supernatural elements.
Written and directed by Shyamalan, Split also stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Morgan) in the role of a young woman named Casey who’s trying to escape her abductor (along with two other girls) by taking advantage of some of his other, more helpful personalities. Ahead of the film’s release on Jan. 20, Universal Pictures has dropped the first three clips from the movie, where we get to see the X-Men: Apocalypse actor display two of those personalities: Hedwig and Patricia.
In the first clip, Hedwig gives the girls a warning that they’re in terrible danger, while in the second one, Casey uses a walkie-talkie to call for help. In the third, the frightened trio meet Patricia, who tries to reassure them by saying “he’s not well” but “he’s not allowed to touch” them. Check out the clips below, but before you do, dig into this official synopsis:
While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being.
Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him—as well as everyone around him—as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.
