One part Black Swan and two parts Black Widow, the latest trailer for upcoming spy thriller Red Sparrow shows Jennifer Lawrence as a prima ballerina, turned desperate-injured- prima-ballerina, turned Russian spy. It sounds like the Black Widow movie we’ve all been waiting for, and if this adaptation of James Matthew’s Red Sparrow book trilogy takes off, we can only hope it’ll drag Marvel into a Cold War that shows us more of what Scarlett Johansson’s Widow can do at the helm.

As for Sparrow, Lawrence’s look, with a striking-distance red dress and bird-like eye-make-up that’s comic book worthy a la Tim Burton era Batman, couples with a latter day X-Men action feel. The plot follows Dominika Egorova (aka Red Sparrow) as she leaves ballet behind to weaponize herself for the Russian intelligence service, and then must pas de deux with a CIA officer who tries to win her to the American way.

Out on March 2, by 20th Century Fox, the film comes from director Francis Lawrence, no stranger to directing Jennifer Lawrence (no relation) as an avian themed heroine (The Mockingjay) in the wildly popular The Hunger Games franchise.

It also stars Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary Louise Parker, and Jeremy Irons.  Hey, if we can’t have the actual Iron Man appear here, at least there’s Alfred.
