Jeremy Renner posted a new Instagram picture from the set of the back-to-back filming of Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4 that shows off his slick new haircut from behind. The tight cut is shaved on the sides and back into what looks a bit like a mohawk from behind, but the front is almost like a pompadour. Renner debuted the look last week on The Late Late Show With James Corden.
"I think it's a reverse mullet," Renner joked on the show. Corden asked if it had to do with the Avengers movie, and of course Renner was a little cagey before saying, "I didn't go into Supercuts and say, 'Hey, shave the sides of my head!' Yeah, it's for the movie we're shooting right now." That refers to Avengers 4, as production has just shifted from Infinity War. When Corden pressed asking if it was a big spoiler or bombshell, Renner said with a laugh, "I think it may just be a haircut!" Then he got compared to Grumpy Cat by co-star Elizabeth Olsen.
Now, a new look is significant for Hawkeye, especially if it comes between the two films. While the movies are "very much still two parts of one story," as the Russo Brothers said in a preview featurette included on the Doctor Strange Blu-ray release, they're no longer simply titled "Infinity War Parts 1 & 2," as they were when they were first announced. In the pages of Marvel Comics, the first part of the Infinity Gauntlet saga saw the unthinkable happen -- Thanos won. If Avengers: Infinity War ends on anything close to that similar down note, then Hawkeye -- and thus Renner -- could change his look to reflect the times, doing something different as part of some sort of resistance.
Or, you know, it may just be a haircut! Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters May 4, 2018.
