Joel Kinnaman can’t see himself returning for Altered Carbon Season 2

SPOILER WARNING: Altered Carbon spoilers live forever below!

Don’t get too comfortable with that Altered Carbon cast, because it doesn’t sound like a whole lot of them will be sticking around for Season 2 of the new Netflix show.

That’s according to the prognostications of star Joel Kinnaman, who told TV Guide he’d be very surprised to see his character return, well, at least the sleeve of his character – or pretty much any of the show’s regulars, for that matter.

It’s all very complicated, but basically speaking, Kinnaman plays the new body of old soul Takeshi Kovacs, which just so happens to be the old body of Bay City cop Ryker. And at the end of the season, Kovacs turns in Ryker’s body.

So when asked whether or not he could see himself returning in some form, Kinnaman seemed highly apprehensive:

"I don't think so, no... We have no idea what the second season would be, but my guess is that they would follow the two other books, and they are all on completely different planets, completely different worlds, and my guess is — and I don't know — my guess is that it's sort of going to be an anthology show where maybe a couple of the characters continue into the next season. But no one knows what's going on in the second season."

The books refer to Richard K. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs novels, of which the first, Altered Carbon, is the basis for Season 1. So Kinnaman is presuming that the next seasons will follow Kovac’s other-sleeve-dwelling adventures in the next two books, Broken Angels and Woken Furies.

The original Kovacs is played by Will Yun Lee in flashbacks, which are a huge part of the show, in no small part because they illuminate the love story of him and Quell (Renée Elise Goldsberry). So perhaps those two are a “couple” of the returning characters that Kinnaman was referring to.

Granted, we don’t even know if Altered Carbon is going to end up getting a second season in the first place, so there’s a lot to sort out. For now, though, let’s just enjoy thinking about just what the heck happened in Season 1, shall we?
