John Boyega is already locked in battling the First Order in the new trilogy of Star Wars films, but that doesn’t mean he can’t find a bit of time for side projects — and one of those looks to be a mysterious new superhero flick.
Boyega, aka Finn in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, told Collider he’s hard at work developing new projects at his production company UpperRoom Productions. One genre he’s very interested to play around in is superheroes, but that doesn’t mean he wants to be just another guy in spandex and a cape. Boyega said he loves to write scripts, and his current obsession is a superhero story that involves world-building and a tone that will ditch some of the typical superhero tropes fans are used to seeing.
“I like creating my own worlds and characters, and layering them on top. Especially with the superhero genre,” he said. “Personally, we feel there’s another way to do it. So we’re working on stuff like that … But it won’t be the ones that you’re used to, I’ll tell you that! [Laughs] It won’t be the ones that you’re used to. Yeah. We’re leaving the spandex behind, and doing a new version.”
Considering the superhero genre is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to capes and cowls, Hollywood will need some fresh blood eventually. The DC and Marvel catalogs are being well mined, and studios are already starting to snap up rights to more than a few indie publishers for fresh superhero ideas. Of course, there are also the occasional straight-up original superhero movies, with no comic inspiration required.
Whatever Boyega is cooking up, he teased we won’t have to wait too long to potentially see him suit up as a mystery hero. What do you think? Is Boyega on any of your superhero wish lists?
