Hopes were high for Fox’s Gotham, but the Batman prequel proved to be a muddled mess of Burton-esque fun and groan-worthy writing. Can Season 2 right the ship?
A new trailer for the series’ return is doing its best to ramp up the excitement, with a distinct focus on the future comic-book villains who will eventually cause all kinds of trouble for grown-up Bruce Wayne. Turns out, even before Bats showed up, they were making life fairly miserable for Detective Jim Gordon.
We get a look at several new villains, but the biggest focus is undoubtedly on Cameron Monaghan's creepy teenage psycho Jerome — who is almost certainly playing a young version of the Joker (either that, or the writers are taking the “fakeout” to the most extreme levels). We get to see him teaming up with some of Gotham’s worst of the worst, and he even gets to show off that creepy grin and Joker-esque cackle.
The first season tried to ride that rocky middle ground of cop drama and comic story, but it seems they’re finally diving headfirst into the campiness here. Considering those moments made for some of the best stuff in Season 1, here’s hoping this at least becomes a train wreck worth watching.
