Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens has added a Mad Men star to its expanding cast. Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm has come on board the Amazon Studios and BBC 2 adaptation of Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s book as the archangel Gabriel, Deadline reports.

The six-episode series was written by Gaiman, who also serves as showrunner. The Amazon TV version of Good Omens takes place in 2018, when the world is on the brink of the apocalypse. Having grown fond of Earth (and its many, many perks) since they’ve lived on our Big Blue Planet for a while, the angel Aziraphale (Underworld's Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (former Doctor Who star David Tennant) aren’t happy campers when they learn the end of the world is on its way. So they go on a mission to sabotage the pending apocalypse.

The archangel Gabriel, who is described as God’s primary messenger, had a fleeting part in the book, but Gaiman says he's given the character a bigger role to play on the series:

“Once we had finished writing Good Omens, back in the dawn of prehistory, Terry Pratchett and I started plotting a sequel. There would have been a lot of angels in the sequel. When Good Omens was first published and was snapped up for the first time by Hollywood, Terry and I took joy in introducing our angels into the plot of a movie that was never made. So when, almost thirty years later, I started writing Good Omens for TV, one thing I knew was that our angels would have to be in there. The leader of these angels is Gabriel. He is everything that Aziraphale isn’t: he’s tall, good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed. We were fortunate that Jon Hamm was available, given that he is already all of these things without even having to act. We were even more fortunate that he’s a fan of the books and a remarkable actor.”

Along with Tennant, Sheen and Hamm, Good Omens also stars Adria Arjona (Emerald City) as Anathema Device, Nina Sosanya (Love Actually) as Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order of St. Beryl, Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders) as Duke of Hell Hastur, Ariyon Bakare (Rogue One) as Duke of Hell Ligur, Michael McKean (Better Call Saul) as Sgt. Shadwell, Jack Whitehall (Decline and Fall) as Newt Pulsifer, and Miranda Richardson (Parade's End) as Madame Tracy.

Good Omens is slated for a 2019 premiere on Amazon Prime followed by a UK premiere on BBC 2. What do you think of Jon Hamm playing the role of the archangel Gabriel?
