Josie and Reggie take center stage in first look at August's Riverdale #5

It wasn’t that long ago that Archie Comics was being written off as a company that always did the same old thing with their classic characters. But in recent years, they’ve reinvented themselves, and have produced some surprisingly sophisticated and groundbreaking stories about Archie and the gang, such as in the pages of Afterlife with Archie or the modernized reboot of the main Archie title.

This led, of course, to the boldest vision of Riverdale yet in The CW’s Riverdale, which has become a hit with fans due to its darker take on the traditionally wholesome town. Archie Comics has brought things full circle with a comic book series based on the show (based on the comic books), and we have a first look at the next issue of Riverdale, as well as a peek behind the scenes of the show!

This issue is set to spotlight iconic bully Reggie Mantle—now played in the show by Charles Melton—and resident rock star Josie McCoy—portrayed on screen by Ashleigh Murray—and to mark the occasion, Archie Comics released this look at both actors having fun on the set of Riverdale. Also featured in the shot are the rest of Josie’s band, the Pussycats, (played by Hayley Law and Asha Bromfield) as well as the notorious Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt).

We also have a three-page preview of Riverdale #5, by the show’s writers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Tessa Leigh Williams, and Brian E. Paterson, with art by Thomas Pitilli, Andre Szymanowicz, and Janice Chang, with covers by Francesco Francavilla and Matthew Dow Smith. Here’s Archie Comics’ synopsis of the issue—out August 9—followed by the preview in the gallery below.

Set in the same universe as the hit CW series, this issue gives us a peek into what makes Riverdale High hot-shots Reggie Mantle and Josie McCoy tick. Reggie's used to getting what he wants, and sets his romantic sights on the lead singer of the Pussycats. But when Josie turns him down, just how far will Reggie go to convince her he's worth an audition?
