Two different birthdays, two very awesome sci-fi heroes.

Ted Cassidy was born on this day in 1932. You know him as Lurch. (TV Lurch.)

Cassidy was 6'9" and a character actor on Star Trek and I Dream of Jeannie before landing his iconic role on The Addams Family. A lot of people don't know this, but he also played the character of Thing for a while.

Because it was the '60s, he was also involved in some people trying to start a dance craze. Do the Lurch, gang.

Also, J.K. Rowling was born on this day in 1965.

You know some of the myth. She was exceptionally poor and writing in a coffee shop and then suddenly, like magic, went on to create some of the most interesting speculative fiction we've ever read. The Harry Potter saga has, of course, become one of the largest franchise properties in history. Quick recap? Here:

New Potter Universe stuff is released on what seems like a near-constant basis. Including this stage play:

And word is Rowling is working on yet another couple of books due this fall.

Tomorrow: Call us Ishmael.
