It was on this day in 1995 that Species premiered.  Natasha Henstridge, Alfred Molina, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger and Ben freaking Kingsley. It did pretty well at the box office when it opened (just behind Apollo 13), but it wasn't without problems and critics weren't in love. One of them actually said the movie was much like "Alien meets V meets Splash." Which:

So, we're not dealing with like, the most progressive thing here, right? Buncha dudes talking about how ladies reproduce and showing puberty that looks like, well, this:

So. Y'know. Species. Do with it as you will.

Today is also the birthday of actress Shelly Duvall.  Let's be honest, it's hard to say the words Shelly Duvall without this video where SHE says it a whole lot:

Duvall was, of course, famously tortured by Kubric on the set of The Shining, and played a good deal of spooky-eyed characters for years after that. Including Olive Oil, where she sings this incredible song written by Harry Nillson.

So. Happy Birthday to Ms. Duvall. Here’s to you!
