Jumanji reboot trades board games for video games in first trailer

Forget that fun, little movie with Robin Williams — the Jumanji franchise is a straight-up action blockbuster now.

The first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has arrived, featuring the cast of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan dropping into the action-packed world of Jumanji. Instead of using a board game as a conduit to this world, it’s now been updated to an old-school, Atari-style video game. Which is kind of a neat idea, with the game’s medium changing to reflect the passage of time, but it’s still a little cheesy.

As expected, the adult cast members are actually avatars for a group of teens who fall into these characters when they enter the jungle-set game. The footage here shows this is going to be a big, explosive family adventure movie — a far cry from the smaller, poignant 1990s original. It could be a good shtick, but it might also be a tough sell for Johnson, Gillian, Black and the gang to play teens in adult bodies in a video game. That’s getting pretty meta there.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opens December 22.
