Kenobi: A Star Wars Story fan trailer forces us to use our imagination for Obi-Wan origin movie

It certainly looks exciting. Too bad it's not the trailer young padawans are looking for.

A fan-made trailer for the forthcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars stand-alone movie has surfaced online and teases the idea of Ewan McGregor reprising the iconic character in his own solo adventure.

Mashing together footage from various Star Wars installments including the prequels and a slew of the actor's other films — most notably his turn as Jesus Christ in 2015's little-seen drama Last Days in the Desert — the teaser envisions just what Kenobi's exile on Tatooine might look like following the events of Revenge of the Sith. Like the bearded Jedi Knight haunted by his apprentice's turn to the Dark Side; learning from Yoda how to transcend death and master immortality; or maybe becoming embroiled in a budding conflict with Tusken Raiders. That is, according to this fan's imagination.

In real life, of course, Star Wars fans will have to bide their time a few years before learning Obi-Wan Kenobi's real fate during "the Dark Times," that mysterious era between the prequels and A New Hope when the Jedi warrior goes into hiding and eventually takes the mantle of "Old Ben" Kenobi who "lives out beyond the Dune sea."

For starters, McGregor isn't formally attached yet to this new outing. The stand-alone was only just announced back in August with The Hours director Stephen Daldry at the helm. And given the behind-the-scenes tumult at Lucasfilm and its revolving door of  directors and the delay of the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode IX until December 2019, it's likely we won't see the Kenobi spin-off until 2020 at the earliest.
