Alan Moore's Batman: The Killing Joke is no laughing matter. It's one of the most controversial stories of all-time, one that takes Batman and The Joker's rivalry to the next level. Now DC and Warner Bros. have produced an adaptation of the graphic novel that doesn't shy away from its dark content.
Unlike most of DC's animated properties, The Killing Joke is rated R for "some bloody images and disturbing content." Most notably (SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ THE COMICS), Barbara Gordon/Batgirl is brutally assaulted by The Joker and left paralyzed with a bullet to the spine. It's a moment that changes the character's trajectory forever. Her father, Commissioner Gordon, doesn't get away either. He's kidnapped, stripped naked and pushed to the brink of insanity after seeing his daughter's condition.
This isn't an easy story to tell. And if the trailer's any indication, the film will stick close to the source material. Veteran actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively, with Ray Wise voicing Gordon and Tara Strong as Barbara. The film is directed by Sam Liu, who previously helmed Justice League vs. Team Titans and Justice League: Gods and Monsters.
