Klingons are trying to 'take over the universe' in Star Trek: Discovery

The early trailers for Star Trek: Discovery made it clear the early Klingons will play a key role in the story — but it sounds like this new crew will be tasked with pretty much stopping an intergalactic takeover, to boot.

While speaking to IGN, co-star Doug Jones, who plays the alien Saru, said the Klingons will essentially be trying to take over the known universe through the events of the series. We’ve already seen the show will feature armor for Starfleet officers, and explosive action more akin to a Michael Bay movie than a Trek show, but Jones said they’ll still be trying to solve this problem like Trek characters.

Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

“The Klingons in our storyline are the bad guy. They are the ones that can’t be reasoned with and they are trying to take over the universe for their own altruistic reasons that they think are right. But in the sensible world of reason, we are trying to peacefully work this out. They won’t have it … [W]e have to win this, but we must do it in Starfleet fashion. We have rules and a Federation to adhere to that is civilized.”

By setting this series in the early days of Starfleet (Discovery takes place several years before the events of The Original Series), it allows the writers a chance to play with the Klingons in a way that makes them more mysterious and outright adversarial in nature (which, yeah, they’re pretty adversarial in the first place).

Do you like the direction they’re taking Discovery? Want to see a galaxy on the brink of war with the Klingons?

Star Trek: Discovery premieres September 24 on CBS, then shifts to CBS All Access.
