We already knew the show was headed to space, but things are also about to get very alien. At New York Comic Con this week, Ming-Na Wen, the actress who plays Melinda May on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., confirmed that the Kree will return to the series next season.
“We have the Kree to deal with [in Season 5]. We can actually mention that and how strong they are and how blue they are. That’s one element. And then we also have aliens,” Wen reportedly said during a roundtable press event at NYCC.
This should come as a surprise to no one. It has been a while since it was revealed that the blue goo that brought Agent Coulson back to life was Kree blood. And the final scene of Season 4 shows Coulson in outer space. Plus, last time the series did a "crossover" with one of its film properties (Captain America: Winter Soldier), it was a tremendous success. Bringing in the Kree seems like a good way to tie the show in with the wider world of Guardians of the Galaxy, which focused quite a lot on the Kree Empire.
We still have a few months before the fifth season of S.H.I.E.L.D. kicks off (after Inhumans is done), so we will have some waiting to do until we learn exactly how the big blue aliens fit in. But fans will certainly be interested to see what kind of trouble the Kree will cause.
