When I saw the first trailer for IFC Films' Personal Shopper a few months ago, my first thought was "What did I just watch?" The second trailer doesn't make things any clearer (since I haven't seen the movie), but I admit to being mightily intrigued by the film. Is it really a ghost story? A thriller? A bit of both? Oh, and it looks like we'll also get a murder mystery thrown in for good measure.
Directed by Olivier Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria), Personal Shopper stars Kristen Stewart as, what else? A personal shopper named Maureen Cartwright whose twin brother died in his Paris home. The young woman, who happens to be a bit of a "spiritual medium," then tries to make contact with the ghost of her dead sibling.
Personal Shopper, which also stars Anders Danielsen Lie, Lars Eidinger, Nora von Waldstätten, Pamela Betsy Cooper and Benjamin Biolay, premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, where it created a bit of a stir and landed Assayas the Best Director award (which he shared with Cristian Mungiu for Graduation). The film opens on March 10.
