Back when Rian Johnson landed the gig to direct Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there were initial reports he would also be contributing to the script for Star Wars: Episode IX. But that’s apparently not the case.
While chatting with fans on Twitter, Johnson confirmed he has not been involved in writing Episode IX. Disney has already lined up Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) to direct the ninth film, and Derek Connolly (Kong: Skull Island) is attached to write. So it seems Johnson's contributions weren’t needed. Not to mention the fact that Disney has a fully staffed story committee figuring out how these movies will play out, anyway.
Considering we haven’t actually seen much of The Last Jedi yet, it’s hard to have much of an opinion here on Johnson's involvement. If the film turns out to be fantastic, it stands to reason Disney could re-up Johnson and keep him involved in a creative role for future films. But much like the Marvel movies, there’s a bigger vision at play here than what one man brings to the gig.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set to open May 23, 2019.
