We’re a little more than a week away from the opening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and the latest trailer focuses on two new additions who should be very familiar to fans of the 1980s animated series.
The sequel to the 2014 live-action reboot that proved a solid box-office hit, Out of the Shadows looks to double down on all the stuff fans loved about the series. Among them: Bebop and Rocksteady, two baddies who became fan favorites back in the animated days (they also popped up in the comics later on, taking a bit of a darker turn). The version here looks to be a mix of the two approaches, with a fair bit of zaniness to balance out the “gritty” world here.
The story follows the heroes in a half shell as they take on Shredder, who has enlisted the help of Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly), and mad scientists Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) to try and take over the world. But things get inter-dimensionally bad when Krang pops up to cause even more trouble. Thankfully, the Turtles will have the help of new additional Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), plus returning allies April O’Neil (Megan Fox), and Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett).
Sure, the film might turn out to be as decidedly average as the first, but the footage from Out of the Shadows at least looks like they’re really trying to have some fun with the premise. With that approach, who knows, this might actually make for a fun weekend at the movies.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens June 3.
