About a month after we lost Star Trek legend Leonard Nimoy, his son, Adam, announced a documentary film called For the Love of Spock, which will trace the history of the character and Nimoy's work on Star Trek over the course of nearly 50 years. Adam Nimoy pitched the project to his father in the months before his death, and Leonard Nimoy intended to be a big part of working on it before his health began to decline. We haven't heard much about the documentary since March, but now Adam Nimoy's back with some big production plans, and he wants Star Trek fans to help him out.
This week, Nimoy launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for For the Love of Spock. The funds will help facilitate interviews with friends, family and colleagues of Leonard Nimoy's, help the production to pay licensing fees for the use of clips and photographs from throughout Star Trek's history, and pay for time in the editing room. In the Kickstarter announcement, Nimoy also announced that Leonard Nimoy's friend and Spock successor Zachary Quinto has agreed to serve as the documentary's narrator.
In outlining the film's goals, Nimoy talked about how the project has evolved since his father passed away. Initially, the film was intended to be a tribute to Spock to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek next year. After Leonard Nimoy's death, though, the film took on a more personal touch, not only because it's become more about the man behind the character, but because Adam Nimoy felt the need to speak more personally about his father.
"Although I had initially intended to take a somewhat detached, objective view of the subject matter, more and more people involved in this film have urged me to interject some of my own perspective on what it was like growing up with Mr. Spock in the house, and how Dad's new-found celebrity and meteoric career affected my life," he wrote.
The campaign aims to raise $600,000 to fund the production, and to sweeten the deal for backers rewards range from rare and even one-of-a-kind Star Trek artifacts to a chance to meet with Nimoy in the editing room as the film is being produced.
