With the film currently in preproduction, casting on director Jon Favreau’s (Iron Man, The Jungle Book) live-action adaptation of The Lion King is going roundly. The upcoming Disney movie has now added comedians Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner to the cast. Hakuna Matata!
According to The Wrap, Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet, This Is the End) and Billy Eichner (Bob’s Burgers, American Horror Story) are in final talks to voice The Lion King’s beloved comedy duo of Timon and Pumbaa, with Rogen set to play warthog Pumbaa and Eichner taking on the role of meerkat Timon.
In the classic 1994 animated film, Timon and Pumbaa sang one of the film’s most memorable tunes: “Hakuna Matata.” The characters were voiced by Nathan Lane (Timon) and Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa) in the animated feature. As most of you may already know, the Swahili phrase translates to “no worries.”
Currently slated for a July 19, 2019 release, The Lion King will see James Earl Jones (Star Wars) reprise the role of wise king Mufasa (Jones voiced the character in the original animated film) while Donald Glover (Community, Spider-Man: Homecoming) will bring Simba to life. What do you think of Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen playing Timon and Pumbaa?
