Original Star Wars star Peter Mayhew has been revealing pages from an early draft of Star Wars: A New Hope, and it turns out the story changed a whole lot along the way.
Which, sure, fans already knew that. Heck, they made a comic miniseries about the insane early draft featuring Annikin Starkiller. But it turns out some major plot points changed once they got a whole lot closer to filming. A new collection of script pages reveals that Obi-Wan Kenobi survived his original encounter with Darth Vader and is assisted off to escape by Luke. Yeah, that’s right: Obi-Wan was supposed to survive and (potentially) could have carried over into future films.
Obviously, that didn't happen, and that death defined a major part of Star Wars lore for decades to come. The pages are a fascinating peek into what could’ve been. Another interesting note: Vader is also described as a “Sith” in the early script draft, which is a word that doesn’t actually appear onscreen until the prequel trilogy.
