Good news, everyone. Locke & Key creators Joe Hill (Horns, NOS4A2) and Gabriel Rodriguez (Onyx) are dusting off Tales from the Darkside for a revival of the cult horror series, with Hill penning the stories, Rodriguez on art and cover duties and Charles P. Wilson III (The Wraith) contributing variant covers.
According to a report over at Bloody Disgusting, the Eisner Award-winning dynamic duo will be reuniting for a IDW comic-book revival of the horror anthology TV series that aired from 1983 to 1988. A movie starring Christian Slater was even released in theaters in 1990. The four-issue series will be a contemporary reimagining of Tales from the Darkside, which was itself a darker spin on that other cult TV series, The Twilight Zone.
It’s said the structure of the comic will have the scope of Locke & Key and will explore the vast core mythology of the TV show. Tales From the Darkside will also aim “to unfold a cohesive universe made up of each individual issue.” According to the creative team behind the revival, the stories will be inspired by the TV series and will also take a meta approach to the source material.
Joe Hill explained his vision for the upcoming comic-book limited series and what fans can expect about the structure:
“This is the show that could’ve been,” says Hill. “The original ‘Tales from the Darkside’ was a fun, bleak little spin on the ‘Twilight Zone’ style anthology. My idea is to give readers a little more. Every story is meant to stand alone, but gradually, you will come to see how they all connect, to tell a single larger story.”
Tales From the Darkside editor Michael Benedetto said:
“The universe that Joe is building here is wholly unique while still doing justice to the original show. And having Gabriel collaborating with him again is the best we could have possibly hoped for. These guys have a proven track record, and this series will only serve to build on their reputations as excellent storytellers and masters of horror and suspense.”
Tales from the Darkside will hit comic-book stores in June. Will this newest limited series from the creators of Locke & Key be a must-buy for you?
