The first trailer for Showtime’s intriguing new literary horror series Penny Dreadful has arrived, and it’s just as creepy as you’d expect. Want to see?

Described as a “psychosexual thriller,” the series will be set in Victorian London and focus on classic Gothic literary figures like Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, as well as new characters created for the show. Think of it as American Horror Story with less Rubber Man and more Edgar Allan Poe. Sort of.

Series writer John Logan told Zap2it he got the idea for the series by combining his love for Gothic literature with some of the themes more prevalent in modern times. Hence the classic figures and some original characters:

"I read 'Frankenstein' again and I was very provoked by it, it's a very disturbing book. I started thinking about the themes and why are we still reading 'Frankenstein' 200 years after it was written? I think it's because the monsters break my heart. Personally speaking, growing up as a gay man, before it was as socially accepted as it is now, I knew what it was to feel different, to feel alienated. The same thing that made me monstrous to some people made me who I am…

There is a reason people feel so passionately about this world, about these mysteries, about the suspense, about the horror. If I feel an obligation to anything -- beyond Showtime for giving me this opportunity -- it's to all those fans like me who love this so much and deserve to be treated seriously.”

It definitely sounds like Logan is nothing if not ambitious, and the first trailer is a nice setup for the freaky, creepy tone we can likely expect when Penny Dreadful premieres May 11 on Showtime. Check out the trailer above and let us know what you think.
