Luc Besson denies 'fake news' that he's making a Lucy sequel

Just a few days ago, it was reported that EuropaCorp — the production company co-founded by writer/director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) — was developing a sequel to the superhuman action hit Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson in the title role. The company's CEO, Marc Shmuger, reportedly revealed the news during a recent meeting with shareholders, and added that Besson had already completed the script.

Now Besson has come forward to deny those reports.

In a post on his Facebook page Thursday, the director launched into an extended message chastising the media for the "fake news" reports that he's making another Lucy film. Calling the modern online media "unbridled and idiotic," Besson categorically denied that a second film is happening.

"For the record: No I'm not preparing Lucy 2. Neither yesterday nor tomorrow," he wrote.

It's still not clear how these conflicting accounts of any possible future film emerged, but Besson's post also called into question the translation of Shmuger's report, "without perspective." Perhaps this was an issue of mistranslation from the intial report. Perhaps Shmuger was overenthusiastic in claiming Lucy 2 was happening. Whatever the case, Besson's making it very clear that this film is, for the moment, not an interest of his.
