Last week, Fox clipped the wings of its resident fallen angel when the network abruptly canceled Lucifer after three seasons. That transformed the Season 3 finale into a series finale that left fans with a cliffhanger ending that may never be resolved. However, co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich aren’t quite ready to give up on the series.

SPOILER ALERT: This post includes major plot points for the Lucifer Season 3 finale. Come back after you’ve seen the episode!

While speaking with Deadline, Henderson and Modrovich dropped a few hints about where Lucifer Season 4 would have gone without preventing themselves from telling the story if they ever get the chance. Modrovich teased “an exciting character from Lucifer’s past who was going to come in and mix everything up. A very personal, intimate figure who we won’t reveal the identity of yet… until we find out if we get the chance to tell the tale on a new network.”

The duo were a little more forthcoming about the closing moments of Season 3, when Detective Chloe Decker finally saw Lucifer’s true face and realized that he really is the devil.

“As you saw in the finale, Chloe saw Lucifer’s devil face,” said Henderson. “Finally, proof that Lucifer really is who he said he was. No turning back. Chloe knows the truth... So that was the big thrust of Season 4 – exploring Chloe dealing with those ramifications, and how it affected her relationship with Lucifer. Both professionally and personally. Can you work with the Devil? Can you LOVE the devil?”

Modrovich admitted that the creative team intentionally went for the cliffhanger ending in part to keep fans enticed for a fourth season.

“We had no idea that we wouldn’t get a chance to wrap up our story in some way,” said Modrovich. “In other words, we figured at the very least we’d get a short order. Which is why we created such a cliffhanger. Even though we knew it was time for Chloe to know the truth, we really are sorry to our fans if we won’t be able to explore the fallout of that discovery. So… cross fingers!!!”

Within the next few weeks, we should know whether Lucifer still has a chance to be revived or if the show has been completely cast out.
