The new season of SYFY's The Magicians has been flipping many of the traditional scripts (well, as traditional as F-bomb-dropping scripts about sexy students of magic can be), putting the Brakebills crew into more and more unfamiliar territory.

The third season of the Lev Grossman adaptation sees magic ripped from the world and its protagonists lodged on a boat — the Muntjac — voyaging for their lives. In what may be the most unique and adventurous episode of a unique and adventurous season, the midseason episode “Six Short Stories About Magic” isn’t what you’d expect from a storytelling perspective — and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the episode, which airs tonight.

Rather than a normal episode, it’s the same adventure told again and again from a total of six different perspectives. Olivia Taylor Dudley bridges the stories together as a new, key character, while guest star Marlee Matlin’s section of the episode is entirely in American Sign Language. The Oscar-winning Matlin has long been one of the most visible and prolific deaf actors — and bringing her chops to the episode makes it all the more engaging.

Thankfully for those wanting to know more about The Magicians’ experimental episode, the behind-the-scenes clip above features Matlin, EPs Sera Gamble and John McNamara, and actors Jade Tailor and Arjun Gupta talking about the creation of the episode and the value of including multiple perspectives.

Gamble explains why they took sound away from the entire act, placing the viewers in the same silence as Matlin’s character, Harriet. The show has long held diversity in all forms as a founding principle, and pushing that ideal into the world of different disabilities makes it a show offering one of the widest ranges of perspectives out there. In the words of Matlin: “It’s magic.”

“Six Short Stories About Magic” airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on SYFY.
