Marvel Comics reveals full mutant team for Astonishing X-Men relaunch

We've talked a lot over the last couple of weeks about ResurreXion, the new Marvel Comics publishing initiative spinning out of Inhumans vs. X-Men, which will see both Inhumans and mutants getting new team books and solo titles in the coming months. These days we're mostly getting reveals of preview pages for books and creative teams we already knew about, but it wouldn't be Marvel Comics without a surprise or two.

For several days now, the publisher's been teasing the arrival of a new X-Men team by revealing its members two at a time. Thursday, Marvel finally gave us not only the entire team roster but also the title of the book they're starring in and the writer who'll be steering the ship.

The book is Astonishing X-Men, marking the fourth volume of that title, and the first since Marjorie Liu ended her run on the book in 2013. The writer is Charles Soule, one of the masterminds of Inhumans vs. X-Men and a guy who juggles so many books at once that I've come to believe he writes comics in his sleep.

And the team? Well, it's a good one: Archangel, Bishop, Fantomex (I love Fantomex, y'all), Gambit, Mystique, Old Man Logan, Psylocke and Rogue. Check out the cover art by Jim Cheung.

As for the plot of the series ... well, Marvel's keeping that secret for now, but Soule's teaser of what he's after certainly sounds interesting enough.

"The book is designed to tell a very focused, specific story, with a few cool main villains," Soule said. "I'm writing it like a puzzle box, with new layers and reveals opening up every issue. So, you'll never know exactly where it's going to go next -- but the structure is built in such a way that almost anything from the long, incredible history of the X-Men can pop up. If you think about these characters, they've been present or involved for virtually every major era of X history, all the big events. That'll play a role in a big way."

Another big secret Marvel's keeping for the moment? The artist on the series. Astonishing has an illustrious art history, with talent including John Cassaday and Phil Jiminez working on the book in its early years, so we can't wait to see what heavy hitter Marvel brings in for this launch.

Astonishing X-Men will debut in July.
