Last spring, Black Panther relaunched under the guidance of writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, marking a new era for T'Challa and for his home nation of Wakanda. The book was so acclaimed and popular among fans that Marvel set about developing a companion series. That got us World of Wakanda, a book that further opened up Marvel's fictional African nation to readers, and boosted diversity at the publisher (series authors Roxane Gay and Yona Harvey were the first black women to script an onging series at Marvel). Now, the power of Black Panther's renewed success is carrying over into yet another new series.
Next month Marvel will launch Black Panther & The Crew, a new street-level crimefighting book featuring the writing team of Coates and Harvey and art by the great Butch Guice (Birds of Prey, Invincible Iron Man). You might remember a superhero team called The Crew that was around briefly back in 2003, but this is a much higher profile group of heroes. So, who's in The Crew? Well, Black Panther will be there, obviously, but so will Storm, Luke Cage, Misty Knight, and former Secret Warrior and Avenger Manifold (He can teleport. He's cool.). Together they're headed to New York to take on a crime wave that begins like this:
"The death of a Harlem activist kicks off a surprising mystery that will unravel new secrets about the Marvel Universe’s past…and set the stage for its future! Fear, hate and violence loom. But don’t worry – The Crew’s got this!"
That doesn't give us much to go n, but I have a lot of faith in this creative team and I'd be here for this particular superhero grouping anyway. I'll take all of the Black Panther/Luke Cage pairing I can get, Misty and Storm will certainly be fun, and I'm really glad to see Manifold getting some love. I'll definitely be picking this one up.
Black Panther & The Crew #1 arrives April 12. Check out a preview below.
