With all the buzz surrounding superhero movies this year, it’s easy to forget that there's some great original sci-fi fare to go along with Man of Steel, Iron Man 3 and the rest of the gang.
One of the most intriguing? Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which follows humanity’s mech-fueled battle against gigantic, building-crushing monsters. To help show the scope of those enormous baddies, dubbed kaiju, the studio has leaked a new pic showing ant-sized humans standing beside a massive footprint crater.
These things aren’t just big. They’re huge.
The pic is a “screen grab” apparently lifted from a news report about the attack on Earth. It’s hard to tell from the trailer how humanity will fare in the fight itself, but it looks like these things will at least not be too hard to track.
For a refresher, here’s the official synopsis:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.
But even theJaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Pacific Rim opens July 12.
Do you think del Toro can pull off one of the biggest sci-fi tentpole flicks of the summer?
