After popping up in minor roles over the past few years, Maximiliano Hernandez’s Agent Jasper Sitwell took on a much larger role in recent weeks thanks to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America: Winter Soldier. So, what about that big twist?
Spoilers ahead for Captain America: Winter Soldier!
As we all know by now, Agent Sitwell has secretly been working for HYDRA for his entire career (“Hail HYDRA!”), and is taken down along with the rest of the agency’s leadership by Cap and his crew. Sitwell also finds himself yanked and tossed out of a moving car, which leads us to think he’s probably dead.
In the wake of the film’s opening, Hernandez had a lengthy sit-down with Zap2it to talk about his reaction to the big reveal that he’s really a traitor, and his thoughts on Sitwell’s (apparent) death. Though he was psyched to have a larger role, he didn’t take it too well when he reached Sitwell’s final scene in the script:
“So I'm reading through it, and I'm like, ‘Oh my god, this is amazing. Oh my god, this is really good. This is crazy. This is really good.’ I'm reading it, and then I see the scene. When it's really revealed is the scene with Senator Stern. That's the first time I had read it, and I was like, ‘Oh, cool, Senator Stern. Cool, I get a scene with Garry Shandling, that's awesome.’ And then we say ‘Hail HYDRA’ to each other, and I was like, ‘What!' And everyone turned and looked and they started laughing. I asked, ‘Are you guys kidding me?’ And then they were laughing some more, and I knew I needed to finish reading the script.
I read the script, and then I see my demise, and then I scream, ‘No!’ and then they immediately knew what I was talking about. I just put my head down, and when I sat back, Anthony had popped his head out of the office. They were waiting in the office for me to come in, and they were like, ‘Dude, you're killing us. Get in here.’ And I said, ‘No, no, no, I've got to finish this. Just give me 20 minutes.’ I finished reading it and I go in and I go, ‘So, I need to talk to Christopher Marcus and Stephen McFeely, the writers, about what they wrote here.’ [ laughs] I was like, ‘I need to vent, and I need to yell at someone.’”
But, he took it all in stride, and even made a hilarious pitch to the Marvel producers to give him his own spin-off show like Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson. Hey, we never actually saw a body, did we? Well played, Sitwell. Well played:
“That thing happens to me, but you don't really see it happening, and Victoria Alonso, who is one of the producers as well, said, "I didn't see you die. I didn't see anything… Yeah, Coulson got run through with an Asgardian toothpick, and he gets to come back. I went up to Jeph Loeb, who's the executive producer of Agents of SHIELD, afterwards. I actually went up to him and Maurissa [Tancharoen] and Jed Whedon, and I said, ‘OK, I died just like Coulson. I swear to God, I better have a TV show.’ [ laughs]”
Did you like the big HYDRA twist? Were you sad to see Sitwell’s (apparent) demise?
