It’s hard to believe, but we’re just a few weeks away from the eagerly-anticipated return of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Want a peek at Marvel’s new-look heroes?
As the final arc of season one indicated, a whole lot has apparently changed when we enter season two of the flagship Marvel Cinematic Universe series. In the wake of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s downfall in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Nick Fury’s secret appointment of Coulson as the agency’s new head, the massive intelligence apparatus is now a tiny group on a shoestring budget.
Plus, there’s also the little problem of S.H.I.E.L.D. being tainted by the HYDRA sleeper cells and the fact that they agency basically has zero legitimate jurisdiction at this point. Most of the first season never really felt like it had those “back against the wall" type of stakes, considering that S.H.I.E.L.D. was a massive organization, but all that’s over. It’s just Coulson and his gang against the world, and that’s exactly what this show needs to be.
The first teaser shows off some new footage, with a nice voiceover from Coulson setting up what to expect. Thankfully, it's a very different world. S.H.I.E.L.D. is working in the shadows now, and it looks like things will be grittier and a bit darker in year two. Things were looking up by the season-one finale, and we’re hoping it’ll finally gel this fall.
The new season premieres Sept. 23 on ABC. What do you think of the trailer?
