An exciting new trailer for visionary director Zhang Yimou’s (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) upcoming Hollywood monster movie, The Great Wall, was unleashed earlier today during the film’s panel at New York Comic Con.
The Great Wall is Yimou’s first English language movie (Yimou told the assembled audience at the panel that it took him 3 years to make the film because of the language barrier) and is the largest cinematic production ever to film in China. The screenplay for the high-flying historical/fantasy movie is based on a story treatment written in part by Max Brooks (World War Z).
Along with Matt Damon — who’s suiting up here as a skillful warrior hell-bent on kicking some monster @s$ (Hawkeye and Green Arrow have nothing on him) — The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian (Kong: Skull Island), Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man 2), pop music icon Lu Han and Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs).
Since they couldn’t shoot the movie on the Great Wall itself, the production built 3 small scale replicas of the historical landmark. The Great Wall “tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.” FYI, the kickass, fearless women warriors in blue? They're called the Crane Corps. And they're just all kinds of awesome.
The Great Wall will open in movie theaters on Feb 17, 2017.
