Legendary has released the first trailer for their upcoming monster movie, The Great Wall.
Directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, the wonderful House of Flying Daggers), The Great Wall stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man 2), Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs), pop music icon Luhan and Jing Tian (Kong: Skull Island). The story treatment was partially written by World War Z writer Max Brooks.
The story follows a group of British soldiers who happen on China’s Great Wall, which was hurriedly built in order to keep something even more terrifying than the Mongols out. According to the movie's official logline, "Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure."
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Yimou said about the movie (this is the Chinese director's first ever English film):
First and foremost, this is an English-language film, and a Hollywood blockbuster. It was already very clear in the script phase. This is a Hollywood monster movie and needs to be made in that style. I don’t want to change that approach, and there’s no need to do that. What I really want is to bring Chinese color and cultural background to the worldwide audience through a film language that they are familiar with.
The film takes place about 1,000 years ago. At its core, it is a period piece and an action film. The fantasy element does play a major role because of the monsters. But, what makes our film unique is that these are ancient Chinese monsters. Even though it’s a fantasy movie, we filmed it in a very realistic way. We want it to feel like the events actually happened. Other than the monster, all aspects of this film are backed by either scientific or historical research.
The Great Wall will open in movie theaters on Feb. 17, 2017. Are you intrigued?
