It’s finally here: The first trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s new film Elysium, which finds Matt Damon taking on the establishment in a stark sci-fi future.
The film has remained a pretty major mystery, and the first trailer is loaded with footage and gives some great insight into the premise. Considering the themes of oppression in Blomkamp’s first film, District 9, it’s no surprise that Elysium cranks those concepts up to 11.
The story follows Matt Damon as he makes the trek from a poor, desolate Earth to the perfect world of Elysium, where the rich live with no problems and leave the rest of humanity to suffer. It looks like a big-budget extravaganza with some equally big ideas, so it should be interesting to see what Blomkamp can do with the full weight of a studio behind him.
Here’s the synopsis:
In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that, if successful, will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
