Meet Avengers: Infinity War's Proxima Midnight

When it was revealed that Thanos’ Black Order (Children of Thanos in the film) was going to be a part of Avengers: Infinity War, some diehard comic book readers freaked out. Others had no idea who they even were.

Now that you’ve seen Infinity War (and if you haven’t, it’s time to click to another story, because spoilers live here), you might want to dive a bit deeper into a certain villain named Proxima Midnight. Aside from her seriously cool visual design that will likely be cosplayed at all the conventions, she’s got a pretty interesting history.

In Infinity War, Proxima Midnight is voiced and motion-captured by Carrie Coon, with stunt performer Monique Ganderton standing in on set. As we learned in the film, she, like Gamora, is one of the Children of Thanos. Proxima Midnight is a huge part of helping Thanos track down the Infinity Stones alongside Corvus Glaive (Michael Shaw), Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughn-Lawlor) and Cull Obsidian, who was sort of a stand-in for Black Dwarf. She was part of the attack on the ship holding the Asgard survivors, and later tries to take down Scarlet Witch and Vision in Edinburgh. She’s pretty upset when Black Widow hurts Corvus Glaive. It’s implied that there may be something between them—and in the comics, they are indeed married.

Proxima Midnight was first created by Jonathan Hickman, though not co-created by Jerome Opeña as the other members of the Black Order were.

She’s a relatively new character, first appearing briefly in September 2013 in The New Avengers Vol. 3 #8, and then with more frequency in later issues. In Infinity #1, she made her debut with the Black Order for the first time.

In the film, Proxima Midnight has superhuman strength, speed and durability, and she’s extra handy with her three-pronged spear that can zap her foes. She’s also got a retractable sword in the Battle of Wakanda. In the comics, the spear was made for her by Papa Thanos, from a sun that was acting as a star, supernova and a black hole all at the same time. It can shoot out an energy netting of sorts that turns black when it nabs a target, and also contains a lethal toxin.

In the comics, the Black Order consists of Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Black Dwarf, Ebony Maw and Supergiant, though they don't all appear in Infinity War—and the group was made up of different members and different allegiances depending on the timeframe.

At one point, the comics version of Proxima Midnight tries to acquire an Infinity Stone from Namor, though runs afoul of the New Avengers. She takes on Spectrum and Luke Cage, though Thanos isn’t too happy with her failure. The Black Order tries to recruit Thanos’ son Thane, but Thane imprisons Thanos and Proxima in amber. Namor later frees both of them for his own reasons. She’s been imprisoned by Apocalypse and hung out with Hela (who later killed her right in front of dear old dad). She’s also fought Thor, Beta Ray Bill, The Collector and more.

It’s likely that you’ve actually seen Proxima Midnight before if you’re a big Marvel animated series fan. She’s appeared in Avengers Assemble, where she’s voiced by Kari Wahlgren. Wahlgren reprised the role in the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series. Video game fans can also play as Proxima Midnight in Marvel: Avengers Alliance, Marvel: Future Fight and Marvel: Contest of Champions.

What about the future? Well, we got a tease about Proxima's relationship with Corvus Glaive in Infinity War, which would certainly be interesting to revisit in a film-connected comic book issue or five. Considering the complex dynamic between Gamora, Nebula and Thanos, it would also be fascinating to get some more backstory about how Proxima joined the Children of Thanos. Why did his indoctrination techniques work on her? What’s the deal with marrying her adoptive brother? We have so many questions that we hope will be answered when it comes to this badass female villain.
