It might be a classic in its own right, but George Lucas’ original 1977 Star Wars film borrowed from more than a few other films, genres and stories along the way. Want to see all those inspirations laid bare?
Michael Heilemann, an interface director at Squarespace, went to painstaking effort to edit clips and pics into the original film to show where Lucas gleaned some of those ideas and concepts. From classic westerns to Flash Gordon, Lucas drew from a lot of different places to make his magnum opus.
It’s a fascinating project, and it puts the entire film into a completely different context once you see all the different components that Lucas combined to create something wholly original but still intimately familiar. Clear off some time, settle in and enjoy:
What do you think? How many of these did you already recognize, and what was new?
