Marvel and Netflix’s upcoming superhero series Luke Cage has found its young female lead. Simone Missick has been cast in the role of Missy, aka Marvel’s Misty Knight, who's described as “a woman with a strong sense of justice.”
In the Marvel comics, Misty Knight is a former NYPD officer who loses her arm by preventing a bomb attack. She ultimately gets a bionic arm from Tony Stark (which would later be made of vibranium, the same metal used for Captain America’s shield), giving her superhuman strength. When the NYPD tried to reassign Misty to a desk job, she quit the force and launched a detective agency with her BFF Colleen Wing, helping Luke Cage/Power Man and Danny Rand/Iron Fist’s Heroes for Hire. She even became romantically involved with the latter.
In Marvel's Civil War comics, Misty Knight played a role, basically siding with Iron Man. She was also a member of the superhero team The Defenders. Luke Cage will be Netflix’s third Marvel series (the first one was Daredevil, which premiered earlier in the year, and the second, Jessica Jones, is set to premiere sometime in the fall). The fourth will be Iron Fist, and it will all lead into The Defenders.
A relative newcomer, Missick joins a cast that now includes Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Alfre Woodard as Minetta, Theo Rossi as Shades Alvarez and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple. Colter will make his debut as Luke Cage on Jessica Jones before headlining his own titulular series on Netflix sometime in 2016.
