Though most average moviegoers probably weren’t familiar with Guardians of the Galaxy until Marvel decided to make a tentpole movie out of it, the comic company is taking strides to get us all up to speed on the intergalactic antiheroes before the film opens in August.
A new book dubbed Legendary Star Lord by Sam Humphries and Paco Medina is set to launch in July. It will join the recently introduced Rocket Raccoon standalone comic that first landed in February. These new offshoots will go out in addition to the current flagship Guardians of the Galaxy series by Brian Michael Bendis and Ed McGuinness.
Along with the Star Lord spinoff, Marvel is also prepping Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy’s Most Wanted, a one-off issue by Will Corona Pilgrim and Andrea Di Vito that will focus on Rocket and Groot. Considering the voice talent behind those characters in the film (Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel), they could prove to be breakouts, so wise move.
As if that weren’t enough, several other comics will be getting Guardians-centric variant covers in July, including Avengers, Ms. Marvel, All-New X-Men, Captain Marvel and Fantastic Four. Considering the fact that Guardians is one of the company’s riskiest movies to date, we’re glad to see them giving the gang some nice play in the comic medium.
But you have to remember that comic fans are the easy target here — it’ll take the average movie fan signing on to make this one a hit. That initial trailer was a good start, and we’ll be watching closely to see how this turns out.
