You're about to see a lot more of Elena Rodriguez — aka Yo-Yo — in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when the series returns for a fifth season later this year. Per Deadline, Natalia Cordova-Buckley has been promoted to series regular.
“Natalia was instantly a part of the S.H.I.E.L.D. family the first day she walked onto set," executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell explained, Deadline reports, "and we’re happy she’s now an official member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.”
Yo-Yo was a big part of last season's Life Model Decoy arc and helped Daisy (Chloe Bennett) and Gemma (Elizabeth Henstridge) pull Coulson, May, and Fitz out of the Framework. But it was her decision to go into the Framework herself to save Mack that took things with him to a new level.
So the question becomes, what happens next? Romance is one thing but, as Whedon, Tancharoen, and Bell said, "Natalia is a powerhouse in her work and in her daily life, and she has imbued one of our favorite characters with her natural strength and humor." So it makes sense to expand her storyline. Cordova-Buckley starred in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot, so it's possible they'll expand on that.
Whatever they're planning, we're likely to get more on her expanded role during the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel on Friday at New York Comic Con. Stay tuned to all of our NYCC 2017 news for details.
