Not only is Neil Gaiman’s American Gods coming to TV with a live-action series on Starz sometime this year, but the award-winning fantasy novel is also getting a comic book adaptation from Dark Horse Comics ... and you can dig into a preview of the first issue below.
The 27-issue graphic novel -- to be split into three distinct story arcs titled Shadows, My Ainsel and The Moment of the Storm -- will be adapted by comic book writer, artist and illustrator P. Craig Russell (Coraline, The Graveyard Book, The Sandman), with Scott Hampton (Sandman Presents: Lucifer, Hellboy) providing the comics' interior art work.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Hampton won't be alone! Mark Buckingham (Fables), Walt Simonson (Thor) and Colleen Doran (Sandman) will be on hand to illustrate "special sequences" (hmm!).
The storyline will kick off like the book -- with ex-convict Shadow Moon being hired as a bodyguard by a mysterious con man named Mr. Wednesday after he's released from prison in the wake of his beloved wife Laura's death. The two of them embark on a road trip across America as Shadow finds himself smack dab in the middle of a war brewing between the old gods (the ones from ancient myths like, you know, ODIN) who have now immigrated to America, and the new gods that are a mirror of modern society's love of money, media, the Internet, technology, drugs, guns and more.
Dark Horse's American Gods will arrive on March 15. In the meanwhile, check out a few cool preview pages (again, via the good folks at THR) from the first issue -- including some pretty sweet variant covers. Will you be picking this one up?
