With his proposed Alien sequel dead in the water, Neill Blomkamp is looking to branch out and test some ideas in the experimental film game.
Blomkamp has announced plans for a new project called Oats Studios, which will basically produce short and experimental films. Blomkamp plans to release the films on Steam, as well as YouTube. He’s released a sample clip you can check out below, but at this point it’s hard to guess exactly what he’ll be putting out. Whatever he makes, Blomkamp hopes to test out feature film ideas in the shorter format along the way.

Fresh off District 9 in 2009, Blomkamp was one of of the hottest up-and-coming directors in the business. His follow-up, Elysium, didn't light the world on fire, then Chappie bombed pretty darn hard. Blomkamp looked to be bouncing back with his throwback Alien film, but that's no longer happening since Ridley Scott is back in the sandbox, so he’s basically a filmmaker without a film.
Pulling back and focusing on some smaller projects could be just the thing for Blomkamp, and we look forward to seeing what he does with the medium. He's a talented guy, and we look forward to his output here. Here's hoping he finds the Next Big Thing.
Check out a teaser for Blomkamp’s project below, and let us know what you think:
