They took their sweet time, but Netflix has finally found the final piece of the Lost in Space remake casting puzzle and completed the main cast. According to Deadline, Bones alum Ignacio Serricchio has stepped into the role of Don West, an officer of the United States Space Corps who was the pilot of Jupiter 2, the spaceship taking the Robinsons on a mission to colonize a distant planet.

In Irwin Allen’s classic 1965-1968 sci-fi series, Major Don West was portrayed by Mark Goddard before Matt LeBlanc took on the role for the 1998 movie. The site describes the Netflix version of the character as “a roughneck smuggling luxury goods on the side who finds in the Robinsons the family he never thought he would find.”

The 10-episode series, slated for a 2018 premiere, hails from Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter), with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) serving as showrunner. Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, Black Sails, Game of Thrones, Westworld) is also on board as producing director and is set to helm several episodes. Which, YAY! Marshall certainly has an eye for the big action pieces (think the fiery attack in Centurion and the Battle of the Blackwater on Game of Thrones).

The premise of the remake will be the same as the original. Lost in Space follows the Robinsons as the family is forced to work together when they find themselves stranded light-years away from their original destination. Being essentially “lost in space,” they have to fight both their new alien surroundings and their personal demons. The original series was set 30 years in the future (with the action taking place in 1997) and revolved around an attempt by the U.S. to colonize deep space by sending one single family on a five-and-a-half-year journey to another planet, until enemy agent Dr. Zachary Smith sabotages the mission, sending the ship off course.

Ignacio Serricchio (Witches of East End, The Wedding Ringer) will star alongside Toby Stephens (Black Sails), who plays astrophysicist and family patriarch John Robinson, Molly Parker (Deadwood) as his wife and brilliant aerospace engineer Maureen Robinson, Taylor Russell (Falling Skies) as Judy Robinson, Mina Sundwall (Maggie’s Plan) as Penny Robinson, Max Jenkins (Sense8) as Will Robinson and Parker Posey (Superman Returns) as a gender-swapped Dr. Smith.

What do you think of the casting of Ignacio Serricchio as Don West on Netflix's Lost in Space?
